Several registered Sheffield residents have contacted us with concerns about the recent earthquakes centered near Irmo, followed by the powerful sonic boom that shook homes throughout the Midlands.
These were not distant events that residents merely read about in the news. The earthquake epicenters were located near our community, and many residents reported feeling the ground move inside their homes.
Because many Sheffield homes are built on raised crawlspace foundations, we recommend that homeowners inspect their properties for new cracks, shifting, separation, plumbing leaks, or other signs of movement.
This recommendation is precautionary. It does not mean that every home has been damaged. It means homeowners should identify potential problems early rather than discovering them months or years later.
The U.S. Geological Survey recorded several earthquakes near Irmo during 2026.
On February 13, 2026, the USGS recorded a magnitude 2.8 earthquake approximately four kilometers west-southwest of Irmo. The earthquake was recorded at a depth of approximately 3.9 kilometers.
On February 26, 2026, the USGS recorded a magnitude 3.0 earthquake approximately five kilometers west-southwest of Irmo. The agency reported the earthquake as extremely shallow, with a listed depth of approximately 0.1 kilometer.
Thousands of people submitted reports to the USGS indicating that they felt the magnitude 3.0 earthquake.
The location of these earthquakes placed the seismic activity close to homes in the Irmo, St. Andrews, Lexington, and northwestern Columbia areas. For Sheffield homeowners, this was nearby ground movement—not an earthquake occurring hundreds of miles away.
The USGS explains that inland North and South Carolina have experienced small earthquakes for centuries, along with occasional larger earthquakes capable of causing damage.
On the afternoon of May 28, 2026, residents across the South Carolina Midlands heard and felt a massive boom.
People reported:
Reports came from Irmo, Columbia, Sumter, Florence and other areas of South Carolina. News19 reported that hundreds of accounts were received shortly before 5:30 p.m. and that some recordings showed cameras physically jolting from the force of the sound and vibration.
The USGS reviewed seismic recordings and eyewitness accounts and concluded that the event was consistent with a sonic boom rather than an earthquake. The agency placed the approximate recorded location about six kilometers north-northeast of St. Andrews.
The USGS cautioned that the location and origin time were approximate because the source of a sonic boom is moving. Unlike an earthquake, the event could not be assigned a conventional earthquake magnitude.
As of the initial reports, no government or military agency had publicly claimed responsibility for the boom, and its exact source had not been conclusively established.
The February earthquakes and the May sonic boom were different types of events.
An earthquake sends seismic energy through the ground. A sonic boom produces a moving atmospheric pressure wave.
However, both can cause a home to shake, vibrate or experience sudden pressure.
A single small earthquake will not ordinarily cause serious structural damage to a properly constructed home. A sonic boom also does not automatically mean a home has been damaged.

Many Sheffield homes are constructed on raised foundations with crawlspaces, piers, beams and floor supports.
These systems can conceal problems because much of the foundation is beneath the home and out of normal view.

Do not enter a crawlspace when there are exposed electrical wires, standing water, animals, mold, unstable supports or other unsafe conditions.

Homeowners should avoid relying solely on a company whose only purpose is selling a particular repair system.
Standard homeowners insurance policies commonly exclude earthquake damage unless separate earthquake coverage or an endorsement has been purchased.
Coverage involving sonic booms, pressure waves or unidentified airborne events may depend on the specific language of the policy and the cause of the damage.
Homeowners who discover possible damage should:
Do not tell an insurer that a particular event caused damage unless that is known. Report what happened, what was felt and what damage or changes were discovered.
Shaking and vibration can affect more than the visible structure.
